Solutions
Why allocate a whole page to cover the topic of “solutions”?
Finding the answer.
Graphic design – just like most other disciplines is about finding an answer. Constrained by budget, target market, deadline or a plethora of other parameters, a solution is achieved by thinking things through logically and creatively; ensuring that our clients get the best bang for their buck.
Don’t do it.
Sometimes a solution involves breaking it to the client that their original plan is not the right one – we’re strong enough to do that (and offer better alternatives).Sometimes the solution lies in pure creativity, other times it’s about budget “what can we do that’s effective for the money we’ve got?” Sometimes it’s having the bravery to admit you don’t know an answer but are prepared to put the effort into finding one.
It helps to know stuff
Whatever it is; underwater photography, an annual report with a human twist, printing 10 million leaflets in six colours, an exhibition stand at the drop of a hat, a new brand identity that means something, it helps to know stuff.Stuff like: replacing the black in a four colour process job with another to get a clients spot colour brand exactly right (and at less cost than five colours); knowing one of the guys we regularly commission is a qualified diver and a great photographer; using news journalists to get stories and write copy for an annual report – to get that “real” feel; building relationships with trusted suppliers so they do things for you quickly and without drama, or even using printing presses in Italy because, for the right job, it’s quicker and more cost-effective. It all adds up to finding the right solution.
